SURFACE EFFECT SOLUTIONS

The future of energy is decided at the surface.

A thin layer of moving air or water separates a machine from its potential. SES develops advanced technologies for aircraft wings and turbine blades — working at the leading edge to cut waste across two of the world's largest energy systems.

REINVENTING THE FUTURE OF ENERGY®
THE PROBLEM

Two of the systems we depend on most run far below what physics allows.

01Aviation
$252B+ gal
of fuel burned by commercial airlines in 2025.
2–3%
of global CO₂ emissions come from flight.
#1 cost
Fuel is the single largest operating expense for airlines.
02Wind & Water
Below max
Turbines convert far less than their theoretical limit, and stall in low wind speeds.
Noise
Disruptive sound restricts where turbines can be placed.
Footprint
Large land and sea footprints rule out many of the best sites.
THE APPROACH

We work in the layer where a surface meets the flow moving over it.

That boundary — on a wing, on a blade — is where drag occurs, where lift is made or lost, and where noise is born. SES is developing technologies that reshape what happens there, so aircraft fly further on less fuel and turbines capture more of the wind and water they already stand in. The physics is shared, so the work spans aviation and clean energy alike.

For the air

Surface technology for aircraft wings — retrofit or built in — that improves how the entire wing moves through the air — reducing fuel usage, increasing range and payload.

For wind & water

Surface technology for turbine blades that causes them to rotate sooner, run quieter, and draw more energy from the same wind or current.
